Batman
This guy draws this comic.

It's bad. Normally, I don't care if people draw bad comics; it's their own business and it's not my fault they suck. What bothers me is how high and mighty he is about it. When he first started the Hero by Night project, he went on and on about how no one cared about super heroes anymore. No one read their comic books, no one remembered the heroes from the ninties (Booster Gold is my favorite thank you very much), but no one could stand up to the mighty tycoons that were set in place. He felt they were comic book Microsofts, cutting out the competition because of their legacy, not because of their interesting plots or characters.

He claimed he was going to stand up to the big name Super Hero idols and cut them down to size. He was going to make a hero comic that was modern, new, fresh, and interesting. He could do it. He's the man. His ideas are so much better than anyone elses.

The thing he fails to realize is those comic book "tycoons" are there because people like them. Granted, Aquaman sucks, but Superman? Batman? They stay and people love them because they're cool! It's not that Batman writers need to shut out competition for fear of being replaced by Duckman, it's that Batman already embodies the non-super hero by night loner angst bucket, and anyone who tries to follow that act gets booed off. Not by DC or Marvel, but by the audience.

Not only that, but Mr. Coffman seems to be ignoring the comics that are recent. Frank Miller is still alive. Sin City isn't brand new or anything, but it's not old. V for Vendetta and Watchmen came out a couple years ago, but they're not old. Fables and Y: The Last Man are still coming out. These things aren't tyrants. They don't have monopolies on the comic book industry. Yet according to its creator, Hero by Night is going to revolutionize comic books. It's going to be the greatest thing. It's going to get America back into comics (because lord knows no one reads Spiderman anymore).

His biggest flaw is that he's appealing to the fans of superheroes. The only people who would bother reading a comic about a superhero are the people who um I dunno, like them. Yeah, people see Batman movies and X Men movies and Superman, but most of them don't rush off to buy the comics afterwards. DJ Coffman is appealing to a crowd that likes the very things he says are horrible, that have grown into twisted ugly monsters with stale story lines and uninteresting characters. I have news for you, DJ Coffman. Hero by Night isn't as original and groundbreaking as you think. The premise for Hero by Night reminds me an awful lot of another superhero floating around in obscure nothing land. His name is The Phantom. Ever hear of him? Didja see that movie? Did you know how bad it was, and how totally unenthused I am about seeing a hyped up copy of him? Here's a picture for you to sleep on.

PS - You're a crappy artist, lolz.

Wahhhhh! I love Hero By Night. And I think DJ is appealing to NEW audiences, not the stale old ones.

Really? I think it's boring. Not only that, but how many people are there who would sit down and read a superhero comic if they didn't like them enough to do it in the first place?

By the way, wtf are you?

Interesting
Insightful criticism... "It's bad" and "You're a crappy artist". Nothing like burning someone who's actually doing what they love to do. Cuz like, successful people suck.

Booster Gold is 80s, 1986 if I remember rightly.

We're supposed to accept a critic who bases his reviews on his own faux pas? No thanks.

Hey, Dan, better check your safe to make sure your vintage Booster Gold comics are safe from evil. If you remember rightly? Well, I'm sure nobody you went to school with remembers you. Maybe the woman who works the soup line does.

WOW, jealous much?

BTW, Watchmen came out in '87. that's 20 years ago and not 'new.' Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but do your research first, dipstick.

Idiot
What a douche. First, Booster Gold is not a "ninties" character (first came on the scene in 86' before you were even born). Second, you're certainly entitled to your opinion (as am I thinking you're an uneducated, ignorant, snot-nosed fanboy), but at least know what you are talking about before you spout off about someone doing what he loves (well, at that) trying to make strides in getting exposure for this industry that a large percent of the country could give two shits about. Third, DJ never claimed HBN would be the savior of the industry or anything innovative, but he has stated over and over again that he wishes to do his part in bringing webcomics to the forefront because it is indeed the future of this medium. Get a clue buddy. You and others like you don't help the cause by berating other creators on poorly designed blogs.

This is so cool! I make a random retarded rant on my livejournal, and I get a bunch of weirdo fanboys commenting on it! Oh my god did you people make my dad.

So besides the fact that you guys are getting really pissy about a livejournal, which is funny in itself, my biggest lol at you is that um I'm a girl :D

It really is. I'm like, a kid. He's a grown man with a family or whatever, so why is he even bothering? Linking everyone to my devart page when I don't do that for a living, have not intention of doing that for a living, and I'm a kid taking a drawing I class at community college just seems really lame to me. But I don't know, apparently I'm not allowed to have opinions on people's stuff, so whatever.

DJ here.. just for the record, I found this link from a ping to my yirmumah.net when I open up wordpress it automatically lists people linking in.

You're entitled to your opinion.. but obviously you're not my audience at all-- don't kid yourself though, the audience already is there.

I actually like your regular comic. I was a fan of the origin story, so I was pretty excited to hear you were making another serious one. Just like, so you know.

I understand that you have an audience for the comic. What I don't think you know is that alot of people who do like superhero comics and were excited about your new thing were seriously disappinted in what it came out as. And I'm not the only one who thinks you came off sounding like an ass.

You sound pretty upset to me, dude. I mean, you keep going on about how people can criticise you as much as they want, and how Pank isn't your intended audience, and how you're soooo happy with the audience you have already. But saying all that over and over and over and over and over just makes you sound hurt. :\ If you really didn't care about what one person said on their Livejournal (and apparently she's uninformed and doesn't know what she's talking about, anyway!), you'd probably, I don't know... not make a big deal out of it.

Does someone need a hug? ♥

And you're Naruto fanboy clone art is any better? At least he's trying to make an original mark on comics. It's hard to be original anymore since everything's already been done. All he's trying to do is make superhero comics for an audience who is not used to the whole superhero thing. Also, if you won that contest, you'd be happy as hell to have won it, and you'd write about it *all* the time.
